SYF in 6 days!!okay since everyones in a competition mood with sports competitions, OM or SYF and freaking out now, ill share something i heard last year. before the first performance of Haven last year, Wong Ping Loong gathered the cast, chorus, and orchestra in this room and told us this story:there was a master violinist, who had begun playing his violin since he was 5. he went through a very strict training regime to achieve the popularity he now enjoyed. his career had been extensive, and now, just before he retired, he decided to give one last magnificent concert.
the audience was hushed in the performance hall, all waiting and anticipating the violinist to play. and then he began. from the instrument flowed a melody so sweet and soothing that the audience was captivated. they hung on to every chord, every note, sanctified by that beautiful song. and when at last it ended, there was a thunderous applause. the violinist bowed.
then he picked up his bow and played that magical piece once more. the effect was once again magical. the applause was tremendous. the violinist bowed.
then he played it again. the same piece. the audience still enjoyed it, but not as much as when it was first played. they applauded. he bowed.
then he played it again. the audience applauded. he bowed.
and he played it again. the audience applauded. he bowed.
again and again, he played that same piece. the audience grew restless. one by one, they slowly made their way out of the exit. still he continued to play.
when the song was played for the 9th time, there was no one left in that concert hall. everyone had grown weary of that beautiful composition.
no one left...save for one bent old man.
as the resonance of that last note died away, the violinist bowed. he looked straight at that old man.
slowly, that old man raised his hands and clapped. a smile shone on his face.
the violinist fell to his knees and tears streamed down his face. he dropped his bow and bowed his head as the old man continued to clap.
everyone in that room who had come to watch him was treated to an unforgettable piece, but only that old man mattered to him. that old man was the tutor of that master violinist. that old man had guided him step by step as he learnt how to play that instument. and when his career started, that old man suddenly broke contact with him. for years that violinist had played to appease the public, but at his last performance he wasnt playing for strangers. he wasnt playing to show others how good he was. he was playing for the approval of his master.
...it went something like that, anyway. basically, it means that through all the hassle and pressure competitions weigh on you, always remember that on the performance day dont perform just to show off. to tell others how good you are. perform for your master, whos guided you step by step through your journey in life, whos never left you even when you felt like giving up. all those expectations arent all that meaningful compared to who youre performing for.perform for God.hope that encouraged you...dont give up!! =)
